Summer 2004

Jan, Amy and Sofia at Rainier National Forest to spend an August weekend camping with a group of Portland friends. It poured rain Friday afternoon and all night. The RV leaked onto our mattress. A mouse inside the RV terrorized Amy through most of Saturday night. Sofia did not nap well and woke up crying both nights. Nevertheless, it was wonderful to see old friends, and the s'mores were very good.

The long, long summer:  Cameron's summer must have been longer than 9 1/2  weeks. After all, he crammed so much into it! After our  Oregon Coast holiday, he spent a week in Boys & Girls Club basketball camp. Next, he went away to camp for the first time.  Called "Extreme Week" and sponsored by Summer Adventures Day Camp, the camp included flying a 172 Cessna, river rafting on the Wenatchee River, camping and hiking near Coeur d'Alene, Idaho, a day at Silverwood Theme Park , and a day at Wild Waters Waterslide Park in Coeur d'Alene. As if that weren't enough, he then spent a week playing flag football with Skyhawks and another week playing tennis. Next  he flew to Idaho to spend a week with relatives, where he swam, fished, caddied on the golf course (and drove a golf cart), and beat his grandpa at Texas Hold 'Em. That was followed by a family RV trip in Oregon with his dad. Although he says he doesn't want to go back to school, in actuality he's looking forward to getting back to school so he can rest up!

Hi ho, hi ho...: Amy returned to work July 6th after a 5-month maternity leave. The first day, Sofia napped well, and Jan was happy to stay home.  Amy, on the other hand, had a rough time being away from Sofia and getting back into a work mindset. With a half-time work schedule and only three days a week gone from home, Amy is confident she will adjust with time.

Honoring the 4th with Tequila:  Cameron played trumpet in the Mills Music Marching Band for the Bothell Fourth of July Parade. Besides playing It's a Grand Old Flag, The Mickey Mouse March, Louis Louis, and Tequila, the kids marched in changing formations and performed unison hat tricks with their baseball caps. The small-town family parade was a great way to celebrate the Fourth. (See photos in Cameron's Album.)

Sofia needs a vacation?:  In the Chateau op Wielen, the family took a vacation along the Oregon Coast from June 27th through July 3rd. We worried that Sofia would not sleep enough to make the trip practical, but although daytime naps were sometimes problematic, she slept well at night, so we were able to cope. We stayed two nights at Fort Stevens, near Astoria, one night at Cape Lookout, south of Tillamook, and two nights at Beverly Beach, south of Depoe Bay. All were very enjoyable Oregon state parks. Our last night we were graciously hosted by David, Jeanne, and Nicolai Williamson in Portland (ah... a real bed and shower!).

Graduation:  On June 24th, Cameron ended his successful career as an elementary school student.   Next fall he will begin junior high!
